Assigment #6

So far I have been learning and enjoying this class. The idea of log writing is'nt new to me and I have been using the blog for long time where I posted pictures and write updates about my family and new ideas of raisin kids. I think it is great idea too to use it in many classes espicaly that requires a lot of writing. In many ways it helps save many trees and help the enviroment to be clean. Also from my experience about blog it make me think differently and come up with new ideas after reading my classmates logs. It is always good to be unique and to write freely. I was expecting of the class a lot of reading and writing like English 101, I wrote many essays and . However, so far I think it has been quite fair. And I have been enjoying the class a lot.

Assifnment #5 On Good and Evil Kahlil Gibran

http://www.katsandogz.com/ongood.html

On Good and Evil
Kahlil Gibran

Of the good in you I can speak, but not of the evil.
For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst?
Verily when good is hungry it seeks food even in dark caves, and when it thirsts it drinks even of dead waters.

You are good when you are one with yourself.
Yet when you are not one with yourself you are not evil.
For a divided house is not a den of thieves; it is only a divided house.
And a ship without rudder may wander aimlessly among perilous isles yet sink not to the bottom.

You are good when you strive to give of yourself.
Yet you are not evil when you seek gain for yourself.
For when you strive for gain you are but a root that clings to the earth and sucks at her breast.
Surely the fruit cannot say to the root, "Be like me, ripe and full and ever giving of your abundance."
For to the fruit giving is a need, as receiving is a need to the root.

You are good when you are fully awake in your speech,
Yet you are not evil when you sleep while your tongue staggers without purpose.
And even stumbling speech may strengthen a weak tongue.

You are good when you walk to your goal firmly and with bold steps.
Yet you are not evil when you go thither limping.
Even those who limp go not backward. But you who are strong and swift, see that you do not limp before the lame, deeming it kindness.

You are good in countless ways, and you are not evil when you are not good,
You are only loitering and sluggard.
Pity that the stags cannot teach swiftness to the turtles.

In your longing for your giant self lies your goodness: and that longing is in all of you.
But in some of you that longing is a torrent rushing with might to the sea, carrying the secrets of the hillsides and the songs of the forest.
And in others it is a flat stream that loses itself in angles and bends and lingers before it reaches the shore.
But let not him who longs much say to him who longs little, "Wherefore are you slow and halting?"
For the truly good ask not the naked, "Where is your garment?" nor the houseless, "What has befallen your house?"

Blog #4 assignment

Writing is a creative outlet for authors to express their feelings, emotions and experiences. Therefore, it is often extremely important to have some knowledge of the author’s life experiences and background to help understand his or her work. In his story, “A clean Well - light place“, Hemingway’s expressed his own feelings and pain of loneliness as an old man. An old man in the story was a reflection of Hemmingway’s own life, full of loneliness and no reason to live.
Thus, the setting of Hemingway's story is essential to the theme of the nothingness (nada) of life where the lack of spiritual faith leaves an empty promise. One of the most touching aspects of this story is when the older waiter expresses solidarity with the old man. While the young waiter is young and confident, the older waiter and the old man seem overwhelmingly lonely and tired out by life. The young waiter portrays society that does not care about old people. Many of the old people live alone without any friends, family, or caretakers. I think the reason for this work was Hemingway’s own depression and loneliness at that age.
Just like the old man who craves a well-lit bar to go to for a drink, the older waiter of "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place" by Ernest Hemingway, desires to keep the care open, providing a light. In fact, after the cafe closes, the old man seeks another lighted place because for him any lighted place is preferable to the darkness of aloneness and "nada”. Hemingway was the one feeling trapped in search of the light. Unfortunately, in real life he could not handle the pressure of the mental and physical issues he had and shot himself in 1961.

Blog #3 Assignment "The Things They Carried

"The Things They Carried"

In his story "The Things They Carried," by Tim O'Brien, he describes a group of soldiers marching through Vietnam. He does this by describing the items that each of them carries with him during the march. The soldier’s carries martial and non metrical items .Each soldier carried things that represent their personality and belief. Beside all these thing s soldiers carries their lives too.Even though the story focuses on Jimmy cross I find Rat Kiley interesting person. Rat Kiley is flat character because he did not change. As medic he carried medical supplies such as a “canvas satchel filled with morphine” and “plasma and malaria tablets and surgical tape”. Rat is a great and brave medic and he takes care of the other men even when he is frightened for his own life. Especially when facing danger. He never cared if there is shooting when it comes to wounded soldiers. When Ted lavender was shot Rat Kiley become very deep emotional and did not believe it.Also one of the most interesting things he carried with comic books. He really enjoyed reading funny stories especially during the war. Also his sense of humor helped during difficulty and emotional situations. He made jokes almost about everything and even worms that he hated the most. Tim and the soldiers admire him because he has sense of humor. His sense of humor help it soldiers forgets the fear of the war. Form his personality we learned that life is all about how we shape it even in the worst situation, we need to laugh and forget about the pain that we have inside and outside
